A flash flood alert has been issued for several areas in the Western Division of Fiji, including Sigatoka, Nadi, Lautoka, Ba, Tavua, and Rakiraki, as heavy rainfall continues to impact the region. The Fiji Meteorological Service reports that a slow-moving trough of low pressure has brought clouds and showers, contributing to these inclement weather conditions.

Compounding the situation is the presence of Tropical Cyclone Urmil, currently at Category 2 intensity, which is positioned over Vanuatu. This cyclone is expected to move southeast, passing to the southwest of Fiji, and is forecasted to generate strong, moist north-westerly winds that will lead to further rain bands affecting the Fiji group.

With these evolving weather patterns, the risk of flash flooding and riverine flooding is notably heightened, particularly in low-lying and flood-prone areas. In addition, tide levels are under close observation. In Lautoka, high tide is anticipated at 3:41 PM, reaching 1.79 meters, while low tide is expected at 10:16 PM at 0.59 meters. Suva is bracing for a high tide at 4:02 PM at 1.65 meters and low tide at 10:36 PM at 0.18 meters.

Authorities are cautioning that the combination of heavy rainfall and high tide could exacerbate flooding, especially near river mouths and coastal communities. As conditions remain unsettled, the public is advised to stay vigilant, refrain from crossing flooded roads and waterways, and adhere to official weather updates. Community safety is of utmost importance as Fijians prepare for the potential impacts of these severe weather conditions.
