The Commerce and Business Development Ministry of Fiji is actively seeking to expand the reach of Fijian products beyond its traditional markets, which include Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and Japan. Assistant Minister Sachida Nand has announced that discussions are currently being held with the European Union to identify new trade opportunities for local businesses, underscoring the government’s commitment to enhancing Fiji’s commercial landscape.

Nand emphasized the Ministry’s support for exporters in meeting international standards by collaborating with the Ministries of Trade and Agriculture, alongside initiatives aimed at promoting the branding of Fijian products. He stated, “We are also looking at exploring other market options so that we can achieve a global reach for our products.”

The collaboration with the European Union is a significant step towards unlocking new export avenues and improving agri-commodity standards. The government is focused on supporting young farmers and enhancing Fiji’s economic growth, which is crucial for global trade advancement. European Union Ambassador to the Pacific, Barbara Plinkert, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the considerable potential and income opportunities available for the people of Fiji.

Plinkert remarked, “So with this program, we are here to support the Fijian agribusiness sector and help small, medium, and micro enterprises build their businesses so that they can reach wider markets and eventually export to other parts of the world as they continue to grow.”

The European Union’s commitment to assisting Fiji’s small and medium agribusinesses is expected to foster growth, enabling them to access larger markets and ultimately expand their export capacities globally. This initiative marks a hopeful avenue for Fiji’s economic development and a brighter future for its agricultural sector.
