Fiji has successfully expanded its overseas markets for locally grown produce, marking a significant milestone for the agricultural sector. Notably, guava is now being exported to Japan, while pineapples have made their way into the Middle Eastern market.
Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna highlighted that this development not only strengthens export growth but also enhances income opportunities for farmers. He explained that the seasonality of pineapples presents an opportunity for establishing large-scale farms dedicated to maximizing production during peak seasons. Additionally, he noted that products that do not meet export standards can still be processed for sale in other markets.
Tunabuna emphasized Japan’s importance as a strategic market for expansion. Meanwhile, pineapple exports to the Middle East, which began in late 2022, are currently in a trial phase, and early consumer feedback has been notably positive. He stressed the need for maintaining strict quality standards throughout the production and export processes.
Looking ahead, Fiji is gearing up to enter the New Zealand market, with Tunabuna expressing confidence in the potential for large-scale pineapple farming to thrive. This expansion into new markets holds promising prospects not just for farmers but also for the overall economy, giving a hopeful outlook for the future of Fiji’s agriculture sector.
