Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the former Chief Executive of the Fijian Broadcasting Corporation, and current Chief Financial Officer Vimlesh Sagar are preparing to enter pleas next month regarding corruption charges filed against them by the Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC). The duo appeared in the Suva Magistrates Court today, where the proceedings were paused at the prosecution’s request for more time to develop the case details.

FICAC officials encouraged Sayed-Khaiyum and Sagar to enter their pleas; however, defense attorneys maintained that their clients would wait to respond until they receive the requisite information. Sayed-Khaiyum is facing two charges for abuse of office and general dishonesty, which allegedly resulted in financial loss. Sagar is charged with one count of general dishonesty related to the case.

The allegations stem from a procurement issue involving a vehicle valued at $207,470 and reflect FICAC’s ongoing fight against corruption, aiming to foster transparency within government and public enterprises. A follow-up court session is set for March 5, where both defendants are expected to formally respond to the charges. This case signifies a move toward increased accountability and illustrates the vital role of ethical practices in public service.
