Fiji Election Reform Push: Opposition Leader Demands Greater Electoral Integrity

In a recent address to Parliament, National Federation Party (NFP) leader and Government MP Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the urgent need for electoral reforms in Fiji to restore public trust and ensure fairness in future elections. Drawing on his experiences during his time in opposition and across the last three general elections, Prasad highlighted issues that resonate with concerns raised in a recent electoral report.

Prasad pointed out that the existing electoral laws could be manipulated, stating, “When we talk about free and fair elections… we in the opposition used to point out laws that could be weaponised.” He criticized certain provisions in the electoral laws as “stupid laws” and contended that failure to amend them would continue to undermine the electoral process.

The emphasis on reform was not only about achieving free and fair elections but about ensuring electoral integrity. “It’s not just about free and fair. It’s about electoral integrity,” he declared, urging lawmakers to recognize the importance of maintaining a higher standard for elections.

The NFP leader also addressed prior restrictions on international observer groups. He criticized the requirement for these groups to conform to terms set by the government, which effectively barred reputable organizations like the Commonwealth and the European Union from participating. Instead, lesser-known regional observer groups were allowed in, weakening the independent oversight necessary for a credible electoral process.

Prasad called on Parliament to thoroughly engage with the recommendations in the electoral report and to adopt reforms that would enhance transparency, neutrality, and independence throughout all stages of elections. His insistence on these reforms reflects a broader commitment to not only ensuring free and fair elections but also upholding the integrity of Fiji’s democratic processes, which is essential for the future of the nation.
