Diabetes Fiji Executive Director Kini Marawa has expressed ongoing funding challenges that the organization faces, despite receiving minimal support from government grants. Marawa emphasizes the need for more robust collaboration with both the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education, focusing on the expansion of school programs. He believes incorporating diabetes and non-communicable diseases (NCD) education into the national curriculum is vital for long-term prevention efforts.

The organization has made numerous attempts to submit policies and budgets, including proposals to redirect excise duty revenue to dedicated health organizations like Diabetes Fiji. Unfortunately, these proposals have yet to materialize, leaving the organization in a precarious position regarding community outreach and operational capabilities.

Marawa has also highlighted the delay in the launch of a crucial Ministry of Health survey report, anticipated between November and December. He insists that the findings will be essential for informed decision-making going forward. Additionally, he is seeking clarity on the advancements of the National NCD and Wellness Strategic Plan, emphasizing that better coordination within the Ministry of Health is still a significant concern that Diabetes Fiji consistently raises in discussions with health officials.

While the challenges are substantial, Marawa’s continuous efforts to advocate for diabetes education and prevention initiatives reflect a hopeful commitment to improving health outcomes for the community. Collaboration between health organizations and government bodies could pave the way for more effective strategies in combating diabetes and NCDs in Fiji.
