Fiji Dairy Dilemma: Can Local Milk Meet Growing Demand?

The dairy industry in Fiji is facing significant challenges to meet the increasing demand for milk, with local production falling dramatically short. Agriculture Minister Tomasi Tunabuna stated that while the local annual demand for milk is around 70 million liters, local farmers currently produce only about seven million liters. This shortfall necessitates a heavy dependence on imports, which Tunabuna finds unacceptable given the potential for enhancing local food production.

“Our biggest challenge now is to grow the industry and narrow the gap between production and demand,” Tunabuna said. He stressed the need for collaboration among industry stakeholders and the government to boost local production. The Minister highlighted the importance of providing young people with appropriate training to expand food production, particularly in the dairy sector.

To address the production shortfall, recent initiatives include educational programs like the graduation of twelve individuals from the Navuso Agricultural Technical Institute. These graduates received a Level 2 National Certificate in Agriculture with a focus on Dairy Production, aimed at equipping participants with essential skills to improve milk production processes.

Reports indicate that dairy farms are currently producing less than half of the national milk demand, with additional challenges posed by cattle disease outbreaks, notably tuberculosis. The government’s efforts to strengthen the local dairy sector, coupled with the Minister’s advocacy for joint initiatives and training programs, are aimed at fostering a more resilient agricultural landscape.

This situation underscores the crucial need for sustained investment in agricultural education and farming practices, resonating with the sentiments of farming advocates throughout Fiji’s history. With continued dedication and collaborative strategies, there is a hopeful outlook that Fiji’s local dairy industry can overcome its current challenges.
