Allegations of nepotism and abuse of office against Dr. Jalesi Nakarawa, the former commissioner of the Fiji Corrections Service, have been confirmed by a tribunal established by the Constitutional Offices Commission (COC). Following a comprehensive investigation, the tribunal has advised the removal of Dr. Nakarawa from his position, a recommendation that has been officially enacted by the Office of the President, resulting in his termination effective February 26, 2026.

The investigation pointed to serious allegations against Dr. Nakarawa, notably favoritism in hiring, particularly concerning positions awarded to family members. Misuse of authority and financial misconduct were also central to the claims. The COC initiated the tribunal in April 2025 to delve into these serious matters and guide the President on Dr. Nakarawa’s future tenure.

Composed of three High Court judges, the tribunal conducted an extensive and independent inquiry, hearing testimonies from over 40 witnesses and reviewing relevant documentation as evidence. Dr. Nakarawa had the opportunity to defend his actions, supported by legal representation.

A particularly notable allegation involved the hiring of his wife and stepsons, which deviated from normal recruitment protocols. Testimony indicated that a specific job was tailored to fit his wife’s qualifications, which went against previous medical advice and policies set by the Minister for Justice regarding job evaluations.

Furthermore, the inquiry looked into reported abuses of power, including claims of improper treatment towards other employees within the Fiji Corrections Service, resulting in unjustified demotions or firings. The tribunal also examined accusations of Dr. Nakarawa misappropriating funds for personal expenses.

Ultimately, the tribunal concluded that the allegations were validated, labeling Dr. Nakarawa’s actions as indicative of poor leadership that diminished public trust in the Fiji Corrections Service and harmed the agency’s reputation.

In the wake of these findings, Mr. Auta Moceisuva has been appointed as the acting commissioner. This change presents an opportunity for revitalized leadership within the organization, as it seeks to move past this controversy and restore public confidence while reinforcing integrity throughout its operations. This transition could herald a new era for the Fiji Corrections Service, fostering accountability and professionalism.
