The Government of Fiji is raising significant concerns regarding the alarming rise in road accidents and fatalities this year, which have surged from 51 to 65 deaths compared to the same period in the previous year—an increase of 14 lives lost. Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, described this trend as “unacceptable and deeply troubling,” emphasizing the public’s dangerous indifference toward traffic regulations and road safety.
Vosarogo highlighted critical issues contributing to this crisis, including speeding, intoxicated driving, reckless overtaking, and the use of mobile devices while operating vehicles. These issues have been underscored by recent tragic incidents, such as the fatal accident in Tavua, which claimed the life of a young man from Vatukoula.
In response to these growing concerns, the Acting Prime Minister announced a thorough review of existing road use and driver licensing laws. Plans for reform may feature stricter eligibility criteria, mandatory retesting, harsher penalties for reckless behavior, and measures for license revocation and imprisonment for repeat offenders. The government is also considering increased roadside inspections and enhanced educational and rehabilitation programs for drivers.
“This rise in fatalities signifies a lack of respect for the value of human life,” Vosarogo remarked, underscoring the profound impact that each fatality has on families and communities.
