The 16 individuals implicated in the significant drug bust of 2.6 tonnes of cocaine in Vatia, Tavua, have had their remand extended. The group, which includes both local residents and foreign nationals, appeared before Justice Samuela Qica in court.
Among the accused, eight have sought bail, with the court scheduled to set a date for the bail hearing at the next session. The first six individuals arrested, who face charges of unlawful importation and possession as well as unlawful entry into Fiji, include Australian national Bainivalu Suguturaga and Ecuadorian fishermen Luciano Enrique Mero Sanchez, Jonathan Javier Solorzano Bermello, Ramon Isidro Vega Parraga, and Alejandro Juvenal Yagual Gonzalez.
The remaining ten individuals, arrested in Nadi on January 17 following the major drug seizure, are accused of conspiracy. These include John Taotawa, Merewalesi Qolimaiwasa, Jonathan Hill, Iliesa Cokanasiga, and Ponipate Mateyawa, along with Norman Fisher, Manasa Saladrau, Sunia Vakaloloma, Travis Cheers, and Anaseini Rokolati. They allegedly conspired to unlawfully transport, transfer, and store a total of 2.6445 tonnes of cocaine.
Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, John Rabuku, has expressed the State’s strong opposition to granting bail, citing the severity of the charges and the extensive documentation involved—specifically, 117 statements submitted for the first six accused. While the defense raised concerns regarding potential delays, Rabuku emphasized the need to address the significant volume of disclosures central to the case.
The prosecution also indicated their intention to consolidate the charges due to their interconnected nature. The proceedings have been adjourned and will resume on the 20th of next month.
