The Fiji Cancer Society is witnessing a substantial rise in demand for its patient support services, which has led to an active effort to aid individuals battling cancer. Chief Executive Belinda Chan shared that the organization allocates over $5,000 monthly solely for transportation to facilitate patients’ attendance at medical appointments and necessary treatments. This commitment underscores the Society’s dedication to addressing the urgent need for oncology care, particularly in light of surgical backlogs and delays in diagnostic testing.
Chan noted a troubling trend: an increasing number of iTaukei patients are seeking help, often diagnosed later in their illnesses and facing significant financial constraints during treatment. “It just breaks my heart because they should be the healthiest, able to access, but they’re not doing much about that bit,” she expressed, shedding light on the challenges these patients face.
The Fiji Cancer Society plays a crucial role in supporting oncology care by covering costs for diagnostic tests, surgical needs, and other essential services. This vital work is sustained through a combination of donor funding, partnerships with the government, and community programs, ensuring that necessary care remains accessible to those who need it most.
With a strong history of advocacy, the Society’s recent statistics reflect the pressing need for their services. Over 7,528 individuals have received assistance, with a significant allocation of funds—$144,000 dedicated to transportation and related costs. Additionally, the organization is proactive in promoting community health through awareness campaigns and screening initiatives that encourage early detection and proactive health management.
In response to the increasing cancer cases, the outreach team from the Fiji Cancer Society has traveled extensively across the country, highlighting the importance of education and community involvement. This strategy aims not only to address barriers faced by patients but also to promote the significance of prevention and early diagnosis. Their commitment to these initiatives is envisioned to enhance health outcomes and foster a culture of support and resilience throughout Fiji’s communities.
As the Fiji Cancer Society forges ahead in its mission to empower cancer patients, there is hope that through collaborative efforts at both local and national levels, a meaningful impact will be made on public health, paving the way for a more hopeful future for those fighting cancer.
