The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is calling for heightened vigilance among parents, guardians, and motorists after a tragic road accident in Nasovatava, Nadroga/Navosa, which resulted in the death of a four-year-old child. This marks the first road fatality in Fiji for the year 2023.

According to initial reports from the police, the young child reportedly ran onto the roadway and was struck by a vehicle operated by a man in his thirties. Despite being rushed to Sigatoka Hospital, the child was declared dead upon arrival.

LTA Chief Executive Irimaia Rokosawa expressed his condolences to the grieving family, emphasizing that this heartbreaking incident underscores the inherent dangers present on Fiji’s roads. He highlighted the importance of supervision, particularly when it comes to young children who may not fully comprehend traffic hazards.

Mr. Rokosawa urged parents and guardians to closely monitor children near roads and driveways, while also appealing to drivers to stay attentive at all times to safeguard vulnerable road users. He stressed that promoting road safety is a collective responsibility and that everyone, including motorists, pedestrians, and passengers, plays a crucial role in preventing such tragedies.

Additionally, he called for community leaders, neighbors, and roadway users to look out for one another, particularly during school holidays when traffic tends to increase and children are more active outdoors.

The LTA, in collaboration with the Fiji Police Force, is actively conducting awareness campaigns and road checks aimed at decreasing reckless driving behaviors and enhancing overall road safety. By fostering a culture of vigilance and care, the community can work together to prevent similar incidents in the future.
