The Minister for Policing in Fiji, Ioane Naivalarua, has urged churches to join forces with the government and law enforcement in tackling the significant impact of drug abuse on families and communities. This call to action was made during the launch of a National Pastoral Response to Drugs workshop in Suva.

Naivalarua emphasized that addressing drug-related issues cannot rely solely on policing; rather, it necessitates robust community participation. While law enforcement plays a critical role, he believes that true healing for the nation must come through collaborative efforts. The Minister outlined a dual strategy to combat drug problems, focusing on both enforcement and preventative community actions.

Law enforcement will maintain efforts in areas such as border control, investigations, and prosecutions, while churches and community organizations are encouraged to engage in creating awareness, prevention initiatives, early intervention strategies, and providing family support. This comprehensive approach aims to not only diminish drug supply but also reduce demand within local communities.

This initiative aligns with the Government’s National Counter Narcotics Strategy for 2023–2028. However, Naivalarua stressed that enduring success will rely on fostering strong partnerships that extend beyond governmental boundaries. He pointed out that drug issues affect various facets of society, including families, villages, schools, workplaces, and churches.

In his appeal, the Minister called on church leaders to collaborate and stay attuned to the challenges faced by communities, especially the youth struggling with addiction and associated social issues. He highlighted that this initiative is not about the government directing the churches but rather about shared responsibility and collaboration in safeguarding the well-being of communities and future generations.

The event was attended by prominent figures including the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, Pio Tikoduadua, and senior representatives from various government agencies and law enforcement. Naivalarua’s vision for a unified approach indicates a hopeful step towards a healthier, drug-free society in Fiji.
