A heavy rain warning has been issued for the entire Fiji Group as weather conditions deteriorate across the islands. According to the Fiji Meteorological Service, a trough of low pressure is influencing the weather, bringing clouds, showers, and significant rainfall. This pattern is expected to persist over the next several days.

The forecast for today indicates occasional rain, which may become heavy at times, along with the possibility of thunderstorms. From tomorrow onward, residents can expect continued periods of rain, again heavy at times, accompanied by further thunderstorms.

Rainfall amounts from the past 24 hours have already been notable, with several locations recording substantial totals. Some of the highest recorded rainfall includes Wairikicake with 91.0mm, Dreketilailai at 82.5mm, and Nanoko at 81.5mm. Other affected areas include Udu Point with 79.5mm, Keiyasi at 70.0mm, and urban locations such as Rarawai and Dobuilevu, which reported 55.0mm and 52.5mm respectively.

The Fiji Meteorological Service has issued warnings about potential flash flooding, particularly in low-lying regions, informal settlements, and areas around businesses and Irish crossings. Such flooding could disrupt traffic, and surface flooding is anticipated in urban areas struggling with drainage.

Motorists are cautioned to drive carefully, as wet roads and low visibility during heavy rainfall can heighten the risk of accidents. Authorities are advising the public to stay alert, keep abreast of weather updates, and take necessary precautions to ensure safety as the heavy rainfall continues to affect Fiji.

This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness in facing extreme weather conditions and encourages community solidarity in navigating the challenges posed by the ongoing rainfall.
