Fiji Braces for Flood Risk as Heavy Rain Persists

The National Weather Forecasting Centre in Nadi has issued updated special weather bulletins today, highlighting the ongoing threat of heavy rain and floods across Fiji. In Special Weather Bulletin Number Five, released at 4:30 PM, officials warned that persistent heavy rainfall poses a significant flood risk, particularly in the eastern half of Viti Levu, which includes regions such as Serua-Namosi, Navua, Suva, and Nausori.

A lingering trough of low pressure is responsible for the cloud cover and showers, leading to bands of heavy rain throughout the country. As a result, authorities have raised concerns about flash flooding, especially in informal settlements and areas with poor drainage systems, as well as in urban centres. A flash flood alert remains in effect for both the eastern half of Viti Levu and the Northern Division, urging caution among residents.

The bulletin cautions that the primary danger stems from isolated heavy rainfall developments, supported by data from the Fiji Flash Flood Guidance System and rainfall forecast models. Recent reports from the Nasinu rainfall station indicate alarming levels of precipitation, with records showing 79.5mm of rain falling in just six hours.

Officials are emphasizing the importance of community awareness and preparedness in light of the current weather situation. Historical data and other bulletins have noted similar patterns of heavy rainfall resulting in flash flooding across various regions of Fiji, reinforcing the need for vigilance.

Despite the challenges posed by such weather conditions, they do highlight the resilience of the Fijian community, which often comes together in the face of adversity. The ability for residents to share information, support each other, and prepare for weather adversities reflects a strong community spirit. Citizens are encouraged to stay alert, avoid crossing flooded areas, and remain updated with ongoing local announcements to ensure their safety during this period of severe weather.
