Fiji Bitter Marist 7s Turns 50, Celebrating Grassroots Rugby and Global Talent

The 50th Fiji Bitter Marist 7s tournament was officially launched yesterday at Walu Bay in Suva, marking a significant milestone in the history of rugby in Fiji. This celebrated event has witnessed the rise of numerous players who have gone on to achieve international fame in the sport. Notable alumni include Jiuta Wainiqolo, Pio Tuwai, and William Ryder, all of whom began their careers at this prestigious competition.

Marist Rugby Club president and tournament coordinator Lawrence Tikaram expressed his pride in reaching the 50th anniversary, describing it as a remarkable achievement. “We are very proud of our history, but also very proud of the fact that we have been able to contribute to grassroots rugby for the last 50 years. It’s been a milestone achievement not just for us, but for all the clubs and players who have participated during the 49 years of Marist 7s,” he stated.

In celebration of this landmark event, Tikaram announced a new tournament logo that embodies the theme “Golden Roots, Global Wings.” The much-anticipated tournament is scheduled to take place in March next year, promising to be a memorable occasion for players and fans alike.

As this tournament steps into its next chapter, the legacy of developing local talent and fostering a love for rugby is set to continue, ensuring that future generations will also have their chance to shine on the international stage.
