Basketball Fiji President Olive Whippy has outlined an ambitious vision aimed at broadening the reach of basketball throughout the nation, while addressing multiple ongoing challenges that impede growth. A primary concern is the persistent shortage of suitable venues for gameplay, which continues to hinder the sport’s development in Fiji.

With the 2026 season on the horizon, Whippy stresses the need for Basketball Fiji to adapt and maximize the limited facilities available. Despite these obstacles, there is a strong emphasis on preparing national teams for significant international tournaments scheduled for the coming year.

“Our biggest challenge is finding venues. If there is availability, the venue goes to whoever pays more, even if we have already booked it. So yes, our biggest issue is finding venues to run competitions,” Whippy stated.

Looking ahead, Fiji’s basketball calendar is filled with critical upcoming international competitions, including two paramount tournaments in 2026: the Commonwealth Games in June in Scotland and the Asian Games in September in Japan. The enthusiasm surrounding these events reflects the resilience and determination of Fiji’s basketball community as they strive to overcome difficulties and elevate the sport on national and international platforms. With ongoing dedication and community backing, the future of basketball in Fiji holds promise for growth and success.
