As families in Fiji gear up for the new academic year, they are confronting increasing pressures due to rising prices for school supplies. This situation coincides with the launch of the Back to School Assistance program, which runs until December 15, with payments commencing from January 17. Finance Minister Esrom Immanuel has acknowledged the uptick in costs monitored by some traders and reassured the public that the Ministry is working closely with the Fiji Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) to tackle these challenges.
Immanuel remarked, “Yes, those instances sometimes happen. And we have FCCC, who is our partner in that regard. So we’ll ensure that those instances don’t happen again.” This assurance includes enhanced oversight and collaboration with enforcement agencies aimed at keeping essential school supplies affordable for all families.
The FCCC has taken a proactive stance during this peak shopping season, conducting over 140 inspections and surveillance operations to ensure compliance with pricing regulations. Chief Executive Joel Abraham highlighted the importance of budgeting and careful planning for parents who are feeling the financial strain. He encourages families to compare prices, select reputable retailers, and remain alert against misleading promotions and scams, particularly those related to school vouchers that advertise substantial discounts.
“By doing so, they can ensure their children have all the necessary supplies for the year ahead,” Abraham stressed. The FCCC enforces pricing regulations for stationery and textbooks under the Counter Inflation (Price Control) (Stationery and Textbooks) (No.24) Order 1993, which outlines acceptable profit margins for wholesalers and retailers in this sector.
