FIJI Airways has launched the latest episode of its Meet the Makers series, which celebrates talented local artisans enhancing the airline’s remarkable inflight experience. The newest feature spotlights Sigavou Studios, a family-run art studio headed by Maria Rova, whose vibrant and meaningful designs now adorn the paper cups used on Fiji Airways flights.
Rova and her team of young artists draw inspiration from Fiji’s rich traditions and breathtaking natural scenery. “Our process in creating the artwork here at Sigavou Studios honors the age-old practice of masi making,” Rova explained. The studio utilizes handcrafted barkcloth created by family members from the remote island of Vatulele as their canvas. While maintaining traditional techniques, they skillfully blend in vibrant, contemporary pigments, resulting in a distinctive art style that continuously evolves.
The artwork produced by Sigavou Studios is not only personal but also deeply rooted in the culture and spirit of Fiji. “The motifs and vivid colors of our cup art represent a profound love for our country,” Rova emphasized. “Everything we do is inspired by Fiji’s beauty, culture, and way of life, crafted with passion by our dedicated team.”
Rova expressed her enthusiasm for this collaboration, describing it as a dream come true for her small studio. “When Fiji Airways asked us to create art for their new onboard cups, we were absolutely delighted. Our first studio was our family’s kitchen table, so seeing our work flying around the world is beyond anything we ever imagined.”
Akuila Batiweti, the chief customer officer of Fiji Airways, highlighted that this partnership underscores the airline’s dedication to celebrating local talent. “Every detail onboard our aircraft tells a story—from the meals to the design of a simple cup. Working with Sigavou Studios allows us to offer our guests an authentic sense of place and connection, and we’re proud to showcase Fijian artistry at 30,000 feet,” he stated.
