Fiji Airways Expands Workforce as It Bets Big on Tourism Growth

Fiji Airways targets growth with Denarau Island resort project and regional expansion

Fiji Airways is experiencing significant growth as highlighted by Chairman Nalin Patel in a recent report presented to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Social Affairs. By the end of 2023, the airline’s workforce has increased to 2,051, showcasing a strong recovery trajectory following the challenges posed by the pandemic.

Patel’s insights were part of the committee’s examination of the airline’s annual report, which was tabled in Parliament earlier this week. The airline’s expansion is not limited to job creation; it has also enhanced its involvement in the hospitality sector by increasing its stake in Richmond Limited—operating the Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa—to 50 percent. Additionally, Fiji Airways has pledged a substantial investment of $230 million toward PT Limited, aimed at constructing a new 190-room resort on Denarau Island, expected to welcome guests by late 2026.

These strategic investments are designed to diversify Fiji Airways’ business operations beyond aviation, thus fostering sustainable growth in tourism and bolstering employment opportunities. Patel affirmed that the Republic of Fiji holds a 51 percent majority share in the airline, with the Fiji National Provident Fund owning 30.02%, and Qantas Limited holding 16.44%. Other regional partners, including the Unit Trust of Fiji as well as the governments of Kiribati, Tonga, Samoa, and Nauru, also contribute to the airline’s shareholder structure.

Patel highlighted the significance of maintaining strong local ownership and a regional commitment, underscoring Fiji Airways’ critical role in the Pacific aviation market as a key employer that enhances regional connectivity.

This positive trajectory in workforce expansion and investment signals an optimistic outlook for Fiji’s tourism and aviation sectors as the nation continues to recover in the post-pandemic landscape. The proactive steps taken by Fiji Airways reflect a commitment to not only revitalizing its operations but also supporting the broader economic recovery in Fiji.
