Fiji Acting PM Condemns Violence Against Civil Servants, Vows Strong Action

Acting Prime Minister and Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, has issued a strong statement condemning the recent violent assault against government officials in Vusasivo, Cakaudrove. Following an incident in which a group allegedly hurled stones at a government vehicle and attacked civil servants on duty, Mr. Vosarogo emphasized that such violence will not be tolerated.

He described the attack as “totally unacceptable” and firmly warned the public against harming civil servants, stating, “Do not touch civil servants. They come to work for you.” He explained that mistreating these officials while they are delivering essential services can lead to a breakdown in community relations, as civil servants might feel compelled to withdraw their services if they face hostility.

Vosarogo highlighted the ongoing issue of harassment against public workers, including nurses, doctors, and teachers, asserting that this behavior must cease. He noted, “It will not be tolerated. Treat your civil servants with civility and respect.” The Acting Prime Minister also directed particular attention towards those involved in the violence, warning them that the law will catch up with them.

In light of recent events, the safety of civil servants has been prioritized, with the Commissioner of Police tasked to assemble a team from Savusavu to carry out inquiries and effect arrests. He also encouraged civil servants to request police escorts when working in potentially hazardous areas, reinforcing that while providing services to communities is vital, the safety of public servants is paramount.

Mr. Vosarogo extended his thoughts to the injured officials, confirming that most have since been discharged from the hospital, while one remains under medical care. He expressed hope for their swift recovery and assured that the government is committed to ensuring that anyone engaged in acts of violence against public servants will face the full consequences of the law.

The Acting Prime Minister’s firm stance reflects a broader commitment within the government and law enforcement agencies to restore respect and cooperation between civil servants and the communities they serve. As these actions unfold, there is a hopeful perspective that with continuous support and understanding, a safer environment for civil servants and the public alike can be fostered.
