Cancer remains a prominent public health challenge in Fiji, as highlighted by Penioni Ravunawa, the Assistant Minister of Health and Medical Services. During a 5-kilometer awareness walk organized by the Fiji Cancer Society in Suva, Ravunawa emphasized the crucial need for greater awareness and action regarding cancer, a disease that has claimed many lives in the country.
“This awareness walk conveys a powerful message: cancer continues to be a critical concern for public health, but early detection and healthy living can save lives,” Ravunawa stated. He urged all Fijians to participate in regular screenings, identify warning signs, and seek medical help promptly. “We must unite as a nation in the fight against cancer,” he emphasized.
Simultaneously, a similar 5-kilometer walk took place in Lautoka, organized by the FSC western branch, commencing at Shirley Park. Litia Qoro, the events and advocacy coordinator for the branch, expressed her appreciation for the overwhelming support from both public and private sectors in the ongoing battle against cancer. She also recognized the families and community members who braved adverse weather conditions to support the cause.
This year’s events resonate with the global theme “United by Unique,” which celebrates the resilience evident in the diverse experiences of cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, families, and healthcare professionals. Such initiatives not only enhance awareness but also nurture a sense of community and collaboration in the fight against cancer, offering hope and solidarity to all involved.
