The NGO Coalition on Human Rights (NGOCHR) has raised urgent concerns regarding the declining state of governance and human rights in Fiji throughout 2025, warning that these conditions could threaten democracy and the rule of law. In a statement issued on December 31, the coalition pointed to systemic injustices and a lack of accountability as ongoing challenges that significantly impact the daily lives of many Fijians.
The organization strongly criticized the proposed establishment of a Truth and Reconciliation Commission, arguing that its framework fails to properly distinguish between victims and perpetrators of past human rights violations. This inadequacy could potentially retraumatize survivors and diminish public confidence in the reconciliation process.
Additionally, the NGOCHR expressed serious concerns over the National Referendum Bill 2025, suggesting that its clauses might criminalize routine advocacy, limiting public discourse and infringing on freedoms of expression, association, and political participation as protected by the Constitution.
The coalition also highlighted an alarming trend of increased militarization within the government, ongoing restrictions on peaceful assembly, and self-censorship among media organizations. It noted that various marginalized groups, including women, children, individuals with disabilities, LGBTQI+ community members, and migrant workers, continue to face significant challenges.
Furthermore, NGOCHR questioned the government’s priorities in spending, the frequency of cabinet reshuffles, and what it termed arbitrary decision-making. These concerns arise amid rising living costs and widespread deficiencies in healthcare services and infrastructure.
In light of these issues, the coalition has called on the government to urgently amend restrictive laws, strengthen police accountability, protect civic freedoms, combat violence against women and girls, and adopt people-centered policies focused on reducing poverty and improving essential services.
NGOCHR emphasized that superficial reforms will not meet the needs of the population; instead, genuine advancements in human rights must be actualized, ensuring transparent governance and guaranteeing justice and dignity for all citizens. This appeal for action represents a vital opportunity for the Fijian government to effectively address these urgent issues and promote a more inclusive and equitable society.
