As the festive season progresses, the National Fire Authority (NFA) is urging communities to stay vigilant following the recent destruction of a home by fire last weekend in Lautoka. The incident, which occurred in Navutu at 3:53 AM, resulted in significant damage estimated at $200,000 to a four-bedroom house belonging to a 58-year-old pastor from the Cross Over Ministry. Tragically, the fire has left six individuals displaced.

NFA Acting CEO Joel Israel emphasized the importance of taking preventative measures to minimize fire risks during this celebratory time. In his statement, he highlighted that the festive season often leads to long hours spent in churches and at gatherings, leaving families tired and prone to overlook safety checks upon returning home.

Israel called on heads of households to ensure that all necessary precautions are taken before winding down for the night. He advised that mosquito coils be placed on non-flammable surfaces, away from curtains and any flammable liquids, and that hazardous substances be secured in safe locations. Additionally, he stressed the necessity of turning off lights and electrical appliances when not in use, noting that such simple actions play a crucial role in fire safety.

Moreover, the NFA underscored the importance of developing an escape plan in every household. Teaching children about fire safety and how to respond appropriately in the event of a fire can save lives and prevent injury.

As families enjoy this festive season, the NFA’s reminder to remain cautious and proactive serves as a crucial step in ensuring everyone’s safety. By taking these measures seriously, communities can work together to reduce the risk of fire-related incidents during this joyful but bustling time of year.
