This week, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Class 1 recall alert affecting over 11,500 units of dairy products due to potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes (Lm). The recall affects 19 states and includes notable items such as Boar’s Head Grated Pecorino Romano in six-ounce containers and larger, 405-pound bags of Boar’s Head Pecorino Romano Grated.
The situation arose from a previous recall by the Ambriola Company, which took precautionary measures two months ago when it identified Lm in eight of its cheese varieties. Ambriola’s CEO, Phil Marfuggi, stated, “We take food safety very seriously and immediately alerted stores and distributors to remove the affected products from shelves.” The company is fully cooperating with the FDA as investigations and testing continue to ensure safety.
The FDA’s Class 1 designation indicates a significant risk level, suggesting there is a reasonable probability that exposure to or ingestion of the recalled products could lead to serious health consequences or even be fatal. In contrast, Class 2 involves products that could cause temporary health impacts, while Class 3 includes violations unlikely to cause any health concerns, like minor labeling errors.
The recall encompasses a variety of cheeses, including Boar’s Head and Locatelli Pecorino Romano brands, in multiple package sizes. These items were distributed across a wide geographic area, including states from Arizona to Wisconsin. Boar’s Head has emphasized that this recall pertains solely to products linked to Ambriola and reassured customers that no other products from different facilities are affected.
Listeria poses a serious health risk, particularly to vulnerable populations, including young children, the elderly, and individuals with compromised immune systems. Symptoms of Lm infection may include fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, and convulsions, often beginning with digestive issues such as diarrhea.
As the FDA and Ambriola work collaboratively on this matter, consumers are urged to stay informed of the developments regarding the recall and to report any adverse reactions if they believe they have consumed the affected products.
