The United States Embassy in Majuro has announced the retirement of Ambassador Laura M. Stone, concluding a notable 35-year career in diplomacy. Recognized for her commitment to strengthening the ties between the United States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands, Stone’s leadership was pivotal during her time in office.

Throughout her tenure, Stone collaborated closely with the Marshallese government to promote mutual priorities defined by the Compact of Free Association. Her efforts were particularly focused on enhancing benefits in key areas such as education, healthcare, infrastructure, and public administration. She played a significant role in ensuring that the advantages of the Compact directly benefitted the Marshallese communities through initiatives like the Individual Support Distribution (ISD) and the Extraordinary Needs Distribution (END).

Under her guidance, bilateral cooperation on maritime security was fortified, while ongoing discussions regarding the US nuclear legacy in the Marshall Islands were addressed. Stone described her experience in the Marshall Islands as “one of the greatest honours” of her career, highlighting the meaningful strides made in ensuring the Compact’s benefits reach the local population.

Looking ahead, she expressed optimism for the continued growth of the US-Marshall Islands relationship, indicating a strong foundation for future collaboration. Stone’s extensive diplomatic career also included significant roles in Washington and international postings in Vietnam, China, Thailand, and Japan.

In the interim, Deputy Chief of Mission Gregory D’Alesandro will assume the role of Chargé d’Affaires until a new ambassador is appointed, ensuring a continuity in diplomatic relations during this transition.
