The Atlanta Falcons have made a significant decision regarding their wide receiver Darnell Mooney, opting to release him due to financial considerations. According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Falcons are preparing to part ways with the talented but expensive player, who would have counted for $18.4 million against the salary cap had he remained with the team.

While the move may come as a surprise at first glance, the financial implications reveal its necessity. By clearing Mooney’s contract, the Falcons are positioning themselves to address other pressing needs as the free agency window approaches.

Mooney had a notable tenure with the Falcons, showcasing impressive performances in 2024 when he recorded 64 receptions for 992 yards and five touchdowns. However, his production waned in 2025, where he managed only 32 catches for 443 yards and one touchdown. His most productive season remains back in 2021 with the Chicago Bears, where he achieved 81 receptions for 1,055 yards.

In his six-year career, Mooney has played in 91 games, securing 309 receptions for a total of 4,028 yards and 17 touchdowns, boasting an average of 13.0 yards per catch. Now entering free agency at the age of 28, Mooney is expected to attract interest from various teams, though it is unlikely to be at the price tag that the Falcons would have incurred.

As the Falcons move forward, this decision could open new opportunities for both the team and Mooney himself, as they each seek to rebuild and strengthen their respective rosters.
