The prosecution has asserted that the criminal case against former deputy prime minister Manoa Kamikamica should proceed in the Suva Magistrate’s Court. FICAC prosecutor Josann Pene argued before Magistrate Charles Ratakele that Mr. Kamikamica’s ongoing High Court matter is distinct from the charges currently being heard in the lower court.

Mr. Kamikamica has submitted an application to the High Court in Suva, seeking a permanent stay of his criminal proceedings which are set for a hearing in March. Prosecutor Pene stated that, following the submission of full disclosure, it is imperative for Mr. Kamikamica to enter a plea. In contrast, the defense attorney, Wylie Clarke, requested that the court postpone any decisions until after the High Court rules on the matter, as the outcome would significantly impact the current case.

Facing serious accusations, Mr. Kamikamica is charged with perjury for allegedly making false statements under oath regarding his involvement in the appointment of FICAC commissioner Barbara Malimali. Additionally, he is charged with providing false information to a public servant, specifically for allegedly conveying the same false information to a Commissioner of Inquiry between December 1, 2024, and March 31 of the previous year. The proceedings have been adjourned, with the next update scheduled for April 14, 2024.

This case highlights the judicial process in handling serious allegations against public figures and reflects the commitment of legal institutions to uphold accountability. As the legal proceedings unfold, they will undoubtedly garner significant public interest, shedding light on the roles and responsibilities of those in positions of power.
