Errol Fifer is celebrating a significant milestone as he marks his 100th birthday this December 28, a momentous occasion that reflects on his incredible journey through a century filled with remarkable achievements and transformations. Born when silent films captivated audiences, Mr. Fifer has lived through monumental changes, including the digital age.
Throughout his life, his personal accomplishments have been noteworthy. In the 1940s and 1950s, he earned recognition as one of Australia’s top amateur golfers, a passion he pursued vigorously until his early 90s. Transitioning from sports to a professional career, he chose accounting and soon transitioned into the hospitality sector, deeply influenced by clients in Sydney’s vibrant Eastern Suburbs during the late 1950s and onward.
In January 1970, Mr. Fifer ventured to Fiji, undeterred by the complexities of developing the emerging island tourism sector. Captivated by the beauty of the Mamanuca Islands, he made strides in the industry by securing a lease to establish what would become the Mana Island Resort, alongside his clients, including connections to former Australian Prime Minister John Howard.
The landscape of the hospitality industry in Fiji continued to evolve under Mr. Fifer’s guidance. After Japanese investors acquired a significant share in Mana Resort in 1973, he balanced his time between his practice in Sydney and his burgeoning interests in Fiji. By 1980, he and his second wife, Anntoinette, relocated to Fiji permanently to develop Malolo Island Resort. Although initially intending to retire in 1992, his passion for the industry led to the successful launch of Nadi Bay Hotel in 1998, recognized as Fiji’s first flashpacker resort. It became a beloved destination for both tourists and locals alike, featuring affordable accommodations and lively entertainment.
Under his stewardship, Nadi Bay Hotel garnered multiple accolades, including winning the Fiji Excellence in Tourism Awards for Best Budget Accommodation in 2004. Mr. Fifer also received the AON Fiji Excellence in Tourism Visionary Award in 2007 for his impact on the industry. He actively contributed to the Fiji Islands Backpacker Association, serving as president for a decade, and engaged in initiatives aimed at improving Fiji’s tourism landscape.
Beyond his professional foresight, Mr. Fifer is celebrated for his warmth and sense of humor, making him a beloved figure among employees and friends alike. His genuine interest in others and the stories he shares render him a respected mentor to many new investors in the region.
As he approaches this momentous birthday, Mr. Fifer reflects on the support he has received throughout his life as a key ingredient to his success. He extends heartfelt wishes for a joyful holiday season to all Fijians, emphasizing the importance of community and goodwill during these festive times. With a life full of stories and legs in every direction, Mr. Fifer stands as a testament to resilience and passion, embodying what it means to thrive and connect with the world around him.
