Eight teenagers from a Philadelphia youth football team found themselves in legal trouble just hours before their championship game, as they were arrested and charged with felonies for allegedly stealing merchandise from a Dick’s Sporting Goods store in Davenport, Florida. The youths, aged 14 to 15, are members of the United Thoroughbreds team and were in Polk County for a matchup when the incident occurred.

According to local authorities, the boys reportedly stole items valued at $2,296.07 on Saturday morning. Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd revealed that the group arranged an Uber ride to the store, where they filled bags and their clothing with 47 items before attempting to leave without paying. Judd jokingly dubbed them the “Thoroughbred Thieves” at a press conference, where he showcased an oversized receipt to underline the extent of the theft.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis took to social media to condemn the actions of the teenagers, stating, “They picked the wrong state — and the wrong county.” The suspecting teenagers, all of whom had no prior criminal records, chose not to provide statements when approached by law enforcement. As a direct consequence of their actions, they were unable to participate in their championship game later that day, which resulted in a 26-6 loss to the Cocoa Tigers.

The charges against them include retail theft over $750 and conspiracy to commit retail theft, both felony offenses. Authorities confirmed that the teenagers will need to travel back to Florida from Pennsylvania to face their legal challenges. This incident serves as a stark reminder of the serious repercussions that can arise from poor decisions, especially for young athletes who are often looked up to by their peers and communities.
