DUBAI: In an inspiring event ahead of the ATP 500 men’s tournament at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships, former world No. 6 Felix Auger-Aliassime and British No. 1 Jack Draper took the time to surprise young tennis enthusiasts during a weekend training clinic.

Both players engaged in drills and shared personal anecdotes about their journeys in the sport, further encouraging the next generation of tennis talent. Draper reflected on his own experiences, recalling how he was inspired by Andy Murray at a similar age. “It’s really amazing to give back, especially to young players,” Draper stated. “Being around players like that when I was younger made me want to play even more.”

Draper, recalling the feelings he had meeting Murray, emphasized the impact such encounters can have. “Just being in his presence definitely made me want to play even more, because I looked up to him so much,” he said. He offered simple yet powerful advice to the young players: “Just enjoy your tennis, keep it simple, listen to the people who are trying to help you, and most importantly, have fun and enjoy it.”

For Auger-Aliassime, the clinic held special significance. He noted the potential in the young players, stating, “They have bright futures in front of them.” He expressed joy at witnessing their enthusiasm and energy on the court, mentioning the innocence of childhood dreams of becoming professional players. “There could be professional players in that group,” he added.

The Canadian stressed the significance of daily dedication in honing their skills: “Some of them can take a little bit of inspiration from this, but the most important thing is what they do every day with their coaches and families.”

Among those who participated was 10-year-old Megan Uzokwe, who expressed her excitement about the clinic. “I was really surprised when they arrived. I felt amazing and so happy … I learned new techniques, especially volleys, and I think I’ll remember this experience forever,” she shared enthusiastically.

The ATP 500 men’s tournament at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships is set to run from February 23 to 28 at the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Stadium, promising to showcase incredible tennis while fueling the dreams of young players. This event not only highlights emerging talent but also showcases the players’ commitment to nurturing the future of tennis.
