The Dominion Brothers Rugby Club is gearing up to compete at the Coral Coast Sevens Tournament in Sigatoka, which kicks off this Thursday. The club will field two teams: an U20 squad aiming for the youth title and a senior men’s team competing for the coveted I-Wau trophy.

Both teams have a strong track record in the tournament; the U20 team clinched the youth championship in 2024 and were finalists the previous year. Meanwhile, the senior team made it to the cup quarter-finals in 2025. Manager Manasa Moto notes that this history of success has encouraged current players to pursue rugby seriously as a potential career path.

The tournament’s substantial prize money has further motivated the players. Many participants are school dropouts or unemployed youths who view sevens rugby as an opportunity to create a stable income for their families. Moto acknowledged the dedication of these young players, highlighting the hard work they’ve put in with the hope that a successful performance could lead them to financial stability.

Preparation for the tournament has been underway since the club qualified last year, and the players are aware of the intense competition they will face in Sigatoka. Moto expressed confidence in his team, stating, “The level of competition at Coral Coast is on par with overseas sevens tournaments. All participating teams have prepared thoroughly, especially the major sides coming from around the world. But our boys have also prepared well and are ready for the challenge.”

With a legacy of nurturing exceptional rugby talent, including notable players such as Juita Wainiqolo, Sireli Maqala, Filipo Bukayaro, and Joji Nasova, the club’s history underscores its significance in shaping the sport in the region. Given the current talent and confidence displayed by both the U20 and senior teams, there is optimism that the Coral Coast Sevens tournament in 2026 could see the rise of more national rugby stars, showcasing the club’s ongoing contribution to the sport.
