The community of Macuata-i-wai, situated in Fiji’s Northern Division, is embarking on a journey of resilience and renewal. Recently at the COP30 Climate Mobility Pavilion, the Global Centre for Climate Mobility (GCCM) unveiled the first Community Climate Adaptation Fund (C-CAF) grant agreement directly signed with the Macuata-i-wai community, which marks a significant step towards empowering local populations to confront climate challenges.
Once a thriving community with twenty households, Macuata-i-wai has faced profound hardships due to the impacts of climate change. Currently, only two households remain as rising sea levels, saltwater intrusion contaminating freshwater sources, and severe coastal erosion have compelled families to relocate inland.
The newly allocated C-CAF grant is set to provide critical funds for the community to restore freshwater systems, construct climate-resilient homes, and revitalize sustainable livelihoods. What distinguishes this initiative is its direct funding mechanism, which ensures that resources go straight to the community without intermediaries. This approach fosters a sense of ownership and accountability, allowing for expedited implementation of vital climate actions.
This initiative aligns with Fiji’s broader commitment to enhance community-led adaptation efforts. It highlights the need for resilient infrastructure, which is essential given the consistent environmental threats faced by vulnerable communities across the country. Recently, Fiji has gained recognition for its leadership in climate adaptation, becoming the first nation to access the C-CAF funding, a $100,000 grant for localized projects that directly address immediate climate threats.
