Digital mapping training for agricultural officers is paving the way for new pineapple exports to New Zealand, marking a significant development in the agricultural sector. The Ministry of Agriculture, Waterways, and Sugar Industry is enhancing the support provided to frontline workers through hands-on technology training aimed at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of farm operations.
In the past year, officers from the Land Resources Planning Division conducted a series of training sessions across Ba Province in locations such as Tavua, Ba, Lautoka, and Nadi. During these sessions, participants learned to utilize innovative tools like Survey123 and ArcGIS for effective farm data collection. This initiative has culminated in a comprehensive survey of pineapple production, which played a crucial role in facilitating the shipment of locally sourced pineapples to New Zealand. This development not only underscores the quality of Fiji’s agricultural produce but also creates new income opportunities for local farmers.
Recently, the ministry concluded a Basic GIS and Survey123 training course in Tailevu Province, further enhancing digital mapping and reporting capabilities among officers. With these skills, they are now better equipped to monitor crop production and farming activities, leading to increased productivity.
The Ministry emphasizes that improved data management will significantly enhance planning efforts and output levels. This advancement is expected to provide farmers with greater access to both local and international markets, thus supporting economic growth within the agricultural community.
