The Detroit Tigers faced a significant setback as they announced that right-handed pitcher Reese Olson will miss the entire 2026 season due to a right labral repair surgery on his shoulder. This news coincided with the team’s announcement of their signings of former MVP Justin Verlander and left-handed pitcher Framber Valdez to bolster their rotation. Olson, who had showcased his potential with a solid 3.15 ERA over 13 starts last season, will officially start on the 60-day injured list as he continues to recover from a right shoulder strain that kept him sidelined for the last two months of the previous season.

At just 26 years old, Olson holds a career record of 13-19 with a 3.60 ERA in 56 games, all played with the Tigers. His absence will be felt keenly as the Tigers strive to improve upon their recent back-to-back exits from the American League Division Series.

To counteract the loss of Olson, the Tigers’ management seems to have made strategic moves by securing the talents of Verlander and Valdez, enhancing their rotation not just for depth but also to increase their competitiveness. Alongside left-hander Tarik Skubal—who is a two-time AL Cy Young Award winner—Verlander and Valdez are expected to join Casey Mize and Jack Flaherty as part of the starting rotation come season opener.

Additionally, right-hander Jackson Jobe, who had Tommy John surgery last June, will also start the season on the 60-day injured list, further emphasizing the need for the Tigers to seek robust pitching options. With these adjustments, the Tigers remain optimistic about improving their standings in the league and making a strong push in the postseason.
