Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and First Lady Casey DeSantis took the stage on Monday in The Villages to unveil significant efforts aimed at enhancing food safety and the integrity of the state’s food supply. This announcement was part of their ongoing initiative, “Healthy Florida First,” designed to ensure that Florida residents have access to safe food products.

During the news conference, the DeSantises shared the results of recent testing conducted by the Florida Department of Health (DOH) on candy products. Governor DeSantis emphasized the importance of transparency in promoting public health, stating, “Our ‘Healthy Florida First’ initiative promotes innovation, ensures accountability, and empowers Floridians to make the healthiest choices for their families.”

In a related endeavor, earlier this month, Florida released findings from a testing initiative that assessed 24 infant formula products sold statewide. This analysis targeted seven major brands, checking for the presence of harmful heavy metals and pesticides. Alarmingly, elevated levels of certain metals, including mercury, arsenic, cadmium, and lead, were found, raising concerns for consumer safety.

Additionally, the DOH evaluated 46 different candy products from 10 manufacturers, revealing that arsenic was present in 28 of those samples. This discovery has compelled state officials to conduct further investigations into the potential health risks associated with these findings, particularly for children who are more vulnerable to exposure.

First Lady Casey DeSantis voiced her commitment to consumer protection, asserting, “As parents and consumers, we should have confidence that the products sold in grocery stores are safe and free from poison. No one should have to wonder whether the food that they are feeding their children is quietly impacting their health over time.” She reinforced the initiative’s goal of transparency and accountability in food safety, ensuring families can trust the quality of what they purchase.

These proactive measures reflect the DeSantis administration’s dedication to safeguarding public health and serving the needs of Florida families. The ongoing commitment to testing and transparency is expected to reassure consumers as they navigate their food choices in the state, showcasing a significant move towards ensuring food safety and integrity for all Floridians.
