Depeche Mode fans are in for a treat as the band’s Memento Mori world tour will soon be available for streaming on Netflix. The platform announced that “Depeche Mode: M,” a concert film and documentary, will be available starting Friday, January 9.
Directed by Fernando Frias, “Depeche Mode: M” showcases a blend of concert footage and documentary elements, capturing the essence of the band’s three performances at Mexico City’s Foro Sol in September 2023. The film delves into the band’s music while examining the cultural perspective on death in Mexico, drawing parallels to themes prevalent in Depeche Mode’s discography, notably following the passing of keyboardist Andy “Fletch” Fletcher in 2022 due to an aortic dissection. This tour marked a poignant moment as it was their first set of performances without Fletcher.
In an earlier statement, the band described “Depeche Mode: M” as “a window into the band’s timeless global influence, and a powerful tribute to the unbreakable connection between music, tradition, and the human spirit.” The film features narration by actor Daniel Giménez Cacho, alongside interviews with fans, artists, and cultural commentators, enriching the viewing experience with personal insights and reflections.
The film had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June, followed by a theatrical release in October, along with the launch of a live album. Fans previously had the opportunity to rent or download the documentary online, creating anticipation for its Netflix debut.
Rolling Stone highlighted the deeply ingrained melancholy in Depeche Mode’s work, noting its significance within their experience. “They’ve specialized in vulnerability,” the review stated, emphasizing that while “Memento Mori” acknowledges the theme of mortality, it maintains an uplifting spirit, with some tracks infused with a sense of optimism. This approach resonates with fans, allowing them to celebrate the band’s legacy while reflecting on their poignant themes.
As Depeche Mode continues to resonate with audiences worldwide, “Depeche Mode: M” stands as a tribute not only to the band’s enduring influence but also to the universal connections between music, culture, and the human experience.
