An El Paso County man has been sentenced to 15 years in prison following a tragic head-on collision that resulted in the death of Laura Lynch, a beloved figure in the music community and a founding member of the renowned band originally known as the Dixie Chicks.

The accident occurred on December 22, 2023, on U.S. Highway 62/180 near Dell City, Texas, when Domenick Chavez, 33, was speeding between 106 and 114 mph while attempting to pass multiple vehicles. The collision with Lynch’s 2016 Ford F-150 was instantaneous, leading to her death at the scene of the crash. At the time of the crash, Lynch was 65 years old, an advocate for her hometown, and well-respected in the community.

Chavez, who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in a plea deal, had a troubled driving history; he was behind the wheel on a suspended license due to previous DWI-related violations. Although alcohol was not a factor in the incident, the reckless nature of his driving led to this devastating outcome. In his statement, El Paso District Attorney James Montoya expressed the profound impact of Lynch’s death on her family and the Dell City community, emphasizing the importance of accountability for dangerous drivers.

Lynch’s contributions to music and her community were significant. As a founding member of the Dixie Chicks—formed in 1989—she played the upright bass and was the lead singer for a time, contributing to the group’s early albums before leaving in 1995. Under the banner of her musical career, Lynch brought joy to many and created lasting memories, including a notable performance in El Paso that she recalled as a dream come true.

Despite her absence, Lynch’s legacy continues through her advocacy and the music she helped create. The Dixie Chicks, now known as The Chicks, have undergone transformations over the years, reflecting shifts in the social landscape, including the decision to drop “Dixie” from their name amid a national reckoning on racial issues.

The community mourns the loss of Laura Lynch, as the profound sorrow over her untimely death resonates not just with her family and friends, but also with those who appreciated her music and her dedication to Dell City. As the case concludes with Chavez’s sentencing, there is a renewed focus on road safety and the impact of reckless driving on communities.
