Dallas Stars, Mavericks Eye New Arenas Amid Shared-Venue Legal Fight

As the Dallas Mavericks and Dallas Stars explore their futures, speculation grows regarding potential new homes for both teams in North Texas. The Stars currently have a base in Frisco, where the Comerica Center serves as their headquarters and practice facility. This has inevitably prompted discussions about a possible full-time relocation to Frisco alongside the Cowboys and the creation of a new arena.

However, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has clarified that there have been no talks about the Stars joining the Cowboys in Frisco permanently. During a recent appearance on 105.3 The Fan, Jones stated, “No, we have not. We have not at all,” addressing the rumors surrounding a shared stadium.

The backdrop to these discussions is a legal dispute between the Stars and Mavericks over an alleged breach of contract related to their shared venue, the American Airlines Center. The Mavericks filed a lawsuit against the Stars on October 28, seeking clarity on the alleged breach of their franchise agreement. In response, the Stars promptly filed a counterclaim to rectify operations at the arena.

Jones acknowledged the complexities involved in having two professional franchises share a venue, saying, “It doesn’t surprise me that you could have some issues… especially under the dynamics of where you might be thinking about a new stadium.” He emphasized the coordination needed for both teams to operate successfully out of the same facility, citing examples of shared stadiums in the NFL.

The Stars and Mavericks have been co-tenants since 1993, first at Reunion Arena and now at the American Airlines Center. As their lease approaches expiration in 2031, both teams are contemplating their options. The Mavericks envision a new basketball-only arena in Dallas, while the Stars are eyeing potential locations in Frisco and Plano for a new $1 billion arena at the Shops at Willow Bend Mall, as reported by The Dallas Morning News.

Both franchises are scheduled to face off in court on January 26, 2026, in a Texas Business Court jury trial regarding their ongoing legal issues. The evolving situation could ultimately reshape the landscape of professional sports in North Texas, making the next few years critical for the futures of both franchises.
