In today’s complex global trade landscape, where criminal networks are evolving and security threats are on the rise, the role of customs has grown increasingly vital. The Minister for Finance, Commerce and Business Development, Esrom Immanuel, emphasized these challenges in his address during the 2026 International Customs Day celebration held at the FRCS headquarters in Suva.

Minister Immanuel pointed out that customs stands as a crucial defense against a myriad of threats, including illicit drugs, prohibited weapons, counterfeit goods, environmental crimes, and transnational fraud. He underscored the continuous pressure customs officers face as they work to protect borders and communities, stating that they often operate in the shadows without receiving the recognition they deserve.

“Every container examined, every passenger assessed, every document verified represents a decision that carries national consequences,” said Mr. Immanuel. He urged that vigilance is the foundation of customs work, but he stressed that it must be accompanied by unwavering commitment to integrity and professionalism.

The minister highlighted the government’s dedication to supporting customs and border agencies through investment in technology, intelligence-led operations, and the enhancement of inter-agency cooperation. This commitment reflects the recognition of the critical nature of their work, which ensures that legitimate trade continues while potential threats are thwarted.

FRCS board chairman Malakai Naiyaga echoed the importance of strong governance to support customs officers in high-pressure environments. He praised their ability to balance firmness with fairness and authority with accountability, stating, “Their work underpins lawful trade, protects communities, and supports the broader development aspirations of our nations.”

The theme of the International Customs Day, “Customs: Protecting society through vigilance and commitment,” resonated during the event, highlighting the essential qualities required of customs personnel in safeguarding society.

This year’s observance serves not only to recognize the crucial role customs officials play but also to reinforce the necessity of continued investment and support for their essential work in ensuring national and global security.
