The Mineral Resources Department has issued a call for qualified consultants to submit proposals for an Environmental Impact and Damage Assessment (EIDA) focused on the uncontrolled discharge of wastewater affecting the Sabeto River catchment in Nadi. This initiative highlights the department’s dedication to addressing pressing environmental issues and maintaining the health of essential ecosystems.
In a notice distributed yesterday, the Department indicated that the chosen consultant will carry out an independent and scientific evaluation of the current environmental and social damage caused by wastewater pollution in the Sabeto River. The comprehensive assessment will involve establishing baseline conditions for the river system, encompassing evaluations of water quality, biodiversity, and human utilization of the river.
The assessment will include a rigorous analysis of various water quality parameters, such as heavy metal concentrations, turbidity levels, and temperature, while also examining the effects on aquatic life and the surrounding ecosystems. Additionally, it will take into account the welfare of local communities that depend on the river for their livelihoods and domestic requirements, particularly in terms of fishing, agriculture, food security, and household income.
