The Commonwealth Secretary General, Shirley Botchwey, has highlighted the increasing challenges to the rule of law, which is essential for peace, stability, and development worldwide. Her comments come as Fiji prepares to hold the Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in Nadi this week, gathering 150 delegates from 56 nations.

Botchwey underscored the significance of a strong rule of law, particularly how its erosion affects ordinary people disproportionately. “For the Commonwealth, the rule of law is a cornerstone of our charter and our work,” she emphasized, advocating for a commitment to practical cooperation rather than mere rhetoric. The ministers at the meeting aim to strengthen the rule of law as the foundation for a future where democracy is accessible, workers are treated with dignity, and vulnerable communities receive protection against climate change impacts.

The three-day meeting, chaired by acting Attorney-General and Justice Minister Siromi Turaga, will revolve around the theme “Anchoring Justice in a Changing Tide: Strengthening the Rule of Law for a Resilient Future.” Turaga expressed a desire for the Commonwealth community to enhance the rule of law through flexible, inclusive, and responsive justice systems.

In addition to discussions on the primary theme, the meeting will delve into challenges and opportunities linked to climate change, digital transformation, and regional cooperation. To provide a comprehensive approach, five side events will bring together youth leaders, individuals with firsthand experience of the justice system, and advocates for disability rights, ensuring their perspectives are included in ministerial discussions.

The outcomes of this critical meeting will contribute to the agenda for the upcoming Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM), scheduled for later this year in Antigua and Barbuda. This event, set to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, represents a significant moment in the Commonwealth’s commitment to promoting the rule of law and addressing pressing global issues. By focusing on collaboration and inclusivity, the Commonwealth aims to foster a resilient future for all its members.
