Coast-to-coast high school football playoffs ignite as teams chase state titles

The high school football landscape witnessed several thrilling matchups as teams vied for victory in their respective seasons. The Rams initially surged ahead to a 14-0 lead in their game, but the Trojans rallied back significantly, beginning with a spectacular 70-yard touchdown run from Wood. Freshman quarterback CJ Cypher later connected with Peyton Zachary for a crucial 41-yard touchdown pass, leveling the score at 14.

Wood continued to showcase his prowess on the field, scoring his second touchdown to give the Trojans a 24-14 advantage in the third quarter, followed by his third score in the fourth quarter, concluding the game with a dominant 31-14 victory. The Trojans’ defense stepped up in the second half, allowing them to maintain control and secure their win.

In other notable highlights, Cathedral High School achieved a remarkable feat last week by becoming the first team since 2013 to defeat Mater Dei (Santa Ana) twice in a single season, winning 28-27 to advance to their first section championship game in ten years. The Huskies, who stand at 11-1, faced their only defeat earlier in the season against Santa Margarita in overtime.

Santa Margarita, having previously beaten Cathedral in the regular season while missing key players, has also advanced to the section title game after a convincing 31-6 win over Orange Lutheran.

In Nevada, Bishop Gorman clinched its fifth consecutive state title and 16th overall with a commanding 44-7 victory over Arbor View at Allegiant Stadium, finishing the season with an impressive 11-1 record punctuated by their only loss to Mater Dei.

Meanwhile, in Texas, the No. 9 Southlake Carroll squad continues its successful run as they get ready to face Prosper in the Conference 6A Division 2 playoffs. Coach Riley Dodge’s team has consistently put up significant points in every game this season.

Back in Arizona, the No. 18 Hamilton squad seeks revenge against rival Chandler for a spot in the Open Division state championship following a thrilling comeback victory in their last encounter.

As the postseason continues, No. 21 Cass Tech from Detroit aims for its second consecutive Division 1 state championship this Sunday against an undefeated Catholic Central team.

Across the board, teams are demonstrating resilience and competitive spirit as they chase their championship dreams, making for an exhilarating conclusion to the high school football season.
