Frank Wilson, who served as interim head coach for LSU football, will not be staying with the Tigers, but instead, he will take on the role of running backs coach at Ole Miss. This development has been confirmed by On3’s Pete Nakos, concluding weeks of speculation regarding Wilson’s future at LSU.
Wilson’s departure comes as new head coach Lane Kiffin reshapes his coaching staff in Baton Rouge. Although Wilson has a history with Kiffin, having been part of his staff at Tennessee in 2009, the lack of communication about a potential role at LSU indicated that Kiffin was considering other candidates.
Renowned for his recruiting prowess, Wilson built his reputation as a high school coach in New Orleans before returning to LSU in 2021 after a previous stint. His new position at Ole Miss marks a significant return to a place where he began his college coaching career. Interestingly, the newly appointed head coach at Ole Miss, Pete Golding, worked as an assistant under Wilson when he was head coach at UTSA.
This transition adds another layer to the ongoing rivalry between LSU and Ole Miss, especially following Kiffin’s previous controversies in Oxford. With Wilson’s move, there is also speculation that current Ole Miss running backs coach Kevin Smith might be making the switch to Kiffin’s new staff at LSU.
Wilson’s transfer strengthens recruiting efforts at Ole Miss and emphasizes the fierce competition between these two programs, promising an exciting dynamic in college football for the upcoming season.
