Claude the Albino Alligator Dies at 30; Public Memorial Planned at California Academy of Sciences

The California Academy of Sciences is grieving the loss of Claude, the beloved albino alligator, who passed away at the age of 30 following a suspected infection. Claude had been a resident of the Steinhart Aquarium since 2008 and had enchanted visitors with his unique appearance and calm demeanor, making him a notable figure within the museum and beyond.

Recently, Claude had been receiving close veterinary attention as his health declined. Despite the efforts of the veterinary staff, his condition worsened, leading to the heartbreaking news of his demise. A full necropsy is being conducted at the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine to determine the precise cause of death.

Claude was not just an alligator; he was an ambassador for wildlife, symbolizing a connection to nature and inspiring curiosity among visitors of all ages. The Academy expressed in a statement, “Claude showed us the power of ambassador animals to connect people to nature and stoke curiosity to learn more about the world around us. We will miss him dearly.”

Born in 1995 at an alligator farm in Louisiana, Claude became the first albino alligator in the museum’s history and soon became its unofficial mascot. His charm extended beyond the aquarium, with his likeness featured on billboards, in children’s books, and during community celebrations, including a citywide event for his 30th birthday in September, where thousands celebrated his milestone.

Visitors often spent time watching Claude in his habitat, captivated by his serene presence. Throughout the years, fans from around the world have shared letters, drawings, and gifts, many of which still decorate the staff’s offices.

The Academy noted that Claudio’s loss would resonate deeply within the community and fans throughout the Bay Area and beyond. In tribute to his impact, a public memorial is being organized, and details will be shared shortly. In the meantime, the museum is inviting people to share their memories and messages for Claude’s caretakers, emphasizing the importance of the bond formed between the alligator and the countless lives he touched.
