Chris Paul, the star guard of the Phoenix Suns, recently shared his personal connections to Los Angeles while visiting the Highland Park Bowl, a place that holds special significance for him. Paul’s love for bowling is deeply rooted in his childhood, as his father participated in bowling leagues, making it a staple of family life during his early years.
Opened in 1927, Highland Park Bowl boasts a rich history, originating during the era of Prohibition when it served as a unique venue that combined a pharmacy, doctor’s offices, and, of course, a bowling alley. Paul vividly recalls how, in the late ’80s and ’90s, the space transitioned to a live music venue and bar, feeling small and unremarkable at the time. However, upon revisiting the space for renovations, he was awe-inspired by its grandeur, discovering impressive architectural features hidden behind years of remodels.
In an effort to restore the bowling alley to its original glory, Paul highlighted the importance of showcasing the vintage bowling machinery that dates back to 1948. Rather than discarding the old machines, many parts were creatively incorporated into the redesigned space, such as chandeliers made from bowling pin setters and table lamps fashioned from halved pins.
Paul believes that the Highland Park Bowl exemplifies the spirit of Los Angeles, a city that has shown resilience through challenges, such as recent wildfires that impacted neighborhoods, including Altadena where he resides. He emphasized the sense of community and support that emerged in the aftermath of adversity, illustrating Los Angeles not just as a place of work but as his cherished second home where bonds are formed over shared experiences.
