Icy conditions and wintry weather across Central Texas have led to a significant number of school closures and delays on Tuesday, January 27. With freezing rain creating treacherous road conditions, many educational institutions have decided to prioritize the safety of students and staff by canceling classes or adjusting schedules.
Austin Community College announced that all campuses will be closed for the day. Similarly, Austin ISD notified families that all its campuses and extracurricular activities will be canceled due to the adverse weather conditions. Other districts, such as Blanco ISD, Dripping Springs ISD, Eanes ISD, and Georgetown ISD, among others, are following suit with full closures.
Brentwood Christian School, Burnet ISD, and Chaparral Star Academy also canceled classes while Concordia University and various other institutions confirm the closure of their campuses. Del Valle ISD, Hays CISD, and Pflugerville ISD, among others, are also among those that will not hold classes on Tuesday.
Some school districts, like Dime Box ISD, Fayetteville ISD, and others, have opted for a two-hour delayed start. Parents in these districts should plan accordingly, as school schedules will begin later than usual. For example, classes at Kirby Hall School will start at 11 a.m., while Mason ISD’s classes are set to begin at 10 a.m.
Huston-Tillotson University is transitioning to remote operations for the day, ensuring that academic instruction continues despite challenging weather conditions.
While the icy weather poses risks, the decision to close schools or delay starts ensures that both students and staff are protected during these hazardous conditions. As the community navigates through this winter weather, the hope is that conditions will improve soon, allowing everyone to return to normalcy.
