Political strategist James Carville has made a striking forecast for the 2028 election, predicting a comprehensive win for the Democratic Party across all three branches of government. During a recent episode of his podcast, Politics War Room, Carville expressed confidence that a Democrat will secure the presidency and that both the House of Representatives and the Senate will also fall into Democratic hands.
Carville specified that the incoming Democratic president will spearhead significant reforms in the judicial branch, particularly regarding the Supreme Court. “The Democratic president is going to announce a special transition advisory committee on reforming the Supreme Court,” he articulated, proposing that the number of justices be increased from the traditional nine to thirteen. He urged attention to the current six conservative justices, asserting that newly appointed Democratic leaders would aim to shift the court’s ideological balance by bringing in four left-leaning justices.
To bolster this prediction, Carville suggested the establishment of a “blue ribbon panel of distinguished jurists” that would recommend changes to the Supreme Court, and expressed certainty that both a Democratic Senate and House would facilitate the passing of these reforms. He emphasized the necessity of restoring public trust in the Court, stating, “they have to do an intervention so we can have a Supreme Court that the American people trust again.”
Historically, the number of Supreme Court justices has varied over the years, but it has been fixed at nine since 1869. Carville’s enthusiasm for potentially altering this structure is not a new sentiment; back in August, he previously proposed increasing the number of justices and supporting statehood for Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C., as strategies for securing Democratic power.
Carville also weighed in on prospective candidates for leading the overhaul, suggesting that former U.S. Circuit Judge J. Michael Luttig could be appointed by a future Democratic president. While Luttig is noted for his conservative judicial background, he has recently voiced sharp criticism of former President Donald Trump, suggesting that he may be involved in efforts to extend his influence well beyond his presidency.
Regarding potential presidential candidates, Carville refrained from making specific predictions but previously indicated a willingness to support Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez if she chooses to run. Despite his reservations about the Democratic Party, he acknowledged her leadership potential, while also voicing skepticism about her electoral success.
As Carville concluded his predictions, he remarked, “I would bet a lot of money that that’s going to happen. A lot.” However, his past predictions surrounding elections have seen mixed results, particularly his confident assertions about Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 election.
Carville’s bold statements reflect his longstanding influence in political strategy and discourse amid a rapidly changing political landscape. Whether his predictions come to fruition remains to be seen, but such forecasts can energize party members and spark discussions about the future of American governance.
