A car fell onto the BART tracks near Interstate 580 in Castro Valley, California, on December 16, 2025, following a multi-vehicle crash that involved a tow truck. The incident began at approximately 2:54 p.m. on the westbound side of the highway, just east of Castro Valley Boulevard. California Highway Patrol (CHP) spokesperson Daniel Rodriguez reported that one individual suffered major injuries, although the full extent of injuries and the total number of people involved has not yet been determined.

In the chaotic aftermath, one of the vehicles, specifically an unoccupied car on the back of a tow truck, got dislodged and fell onto the BART tracks. BART service between the Castro Valley and West Dublin/Pleasanton stations was halted as a result, causing significant disruptions to the transit system. At around 4:08 p.m., BART’s spokesperson Michelle Robertson confirmed that preliminary reports suggested the car was in the process of being loaded when the accident occurred.

Despite the disruptions, CHP officials announced that all westbound and eastbound lanes of Interstate 580 were reopened shortly after 6 p.m. However, one of the two BART tracks was only partially operational as of the latest updates, with significant repairs anticipated once service ended for the evening.

The investigation into the crash remains ongoing, with authorities working diligently to gather further details about the incident. The quick response from the Alameda County Fire Department and CHP has been critical in managing the situation and ensuring public safety. With partial transit service now restored, commuters can expect some level of normalcy to return as the repairs are completed and further assessments are made.
