Vancouver Canucks fans received some unexpected news on Thursday, as the team made a trade involving long-serving defenceman Jett Woo. General manager Patrik Allvin executed a deal that sent Woo to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for young defenceman Jack Thompson.
In a press release, Allvin expressed gratitude for Woo’s contributions to the organization, highlighting his role in the Canucks’ AHL championship-winning team. “Jett was a key part of our AHL championship-winning team and we would like to thank him for all that he has done for the Canucks organization,” Allvin stated. He also mentioned the excitement of adding Thompson to bolster the blueline depth in the organization.
Woo, drafted 37th overall by the Canucks in 2018, had a promising start but was unable to make an impact in the NHL, playing 293 regular-season games strictly in the AHL. Despite initial hopes that he could evolve into a physical presence on the blue line, his performance didn’t develop as expected, leading to his trade now after spending five years in the organization.
Thompson, who is two years younger at 23, was a third-round pick for the Tampa Bay Lightning in 2020. This marks the second time he has been traded at the deadline, previously being dealt to the Sharks alongside a third-round pick in exchange for Anthony Duclair. In 34 NHL games thus far, Thompson has recorded four goals and 10 points, all gained during his tenure with San Jose.
As the Canucks look to round out their roster, there’s potential for Thompson to see some ice time this season, especially with recent moves that opened up opportunities on the defensive line. The recall of 26-year-old Cole Clayton on the same day underscores this shift, following the trade of Tyler Myers and the injury to Pierre-Olivier Joseph.
Both players’ contracts are set to expire at the end of the season, with Woo becoming an unrestricted free agent, and Thompson a restricted free agent. Notably, the Canucks will also benefit financially from this trade, as Thompson’s AHL salary of $115,000 is less than Woo’s $290,000, reflecting the team’s strategic approach to roster management during the season.
This trade signifies a fresh start for both Woo and Thompson, offering each player a new opportunity while strengthening the Canucks’ defensive lineup for the future.
